Michael D. Sousa is an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law where he teaches the spectrum of the bankruptcy law and commercial law curriculum. Prior to his full-time faculty appointment at the Sturm College of Law, Mr. Sousa served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at both Seton Hall University School of Law and Rutgers University School of LawCamden. In addition, prior to joining the faculty at the Sturm College of Law, Mr. Sousa was an associate attorney in the Business Reorganization and Financial Restructuring Practice Group of Duane Morris LLP, an AM Law 100 international law firm. During his tenure at Duane Morris, Mr. Sousa volunteered his time, pro bono, at the Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project, representing debtors seeking Chapter 7 relief.
Mr. Sousa also served as a law clerk in both federal and state court. He served as law clerk to: the Honorable Rosemary Gambardella, Chief Bankruptcy Judge for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey; the Honorable Donald H. Steckroth, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the District of New Jersey; the Honorable William J. Martini, United States District Judge for the District of New Jersey; and the Honorable John E. Wallace, Jr., in the Superior Court of New Jersey Appellate Division.
Mr. Sousa received his Juris Doctor from Rutgers University School of LawCamden and his LL.M. in Bankruptcy from St. Johns University School of Law, where he was named the American Bankruptcy Institute Scholar. While at St. Johns Law School, Mr. Sousa received the CALI Award for Excellence in Partnership Bankruptcy and served as Drafting Committee Chair for the Duberstein National Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition.
In addition to his contributing authorship for the Consumer Bankruptcy Manual, Mr. Sousa serves as a contributing editor and regular author to the Journal of Bankruptcy Law and Practice, the Norton Annual Survey of Bankruptcy Law, Norton Bankruptcy Law and Practice 3d, and the American Bankruptcy Institute Journal.
