Steven Oberman
Oberman has been an attorney in Knoxville, Tenn., since 1986. Although he has represented clients charged with crimes ranging from murder to speeding tickets, he is recognized as a national authority on the intricacies of DUI defense, having successfully represented more than 2,000 clients charged with DUI and related offenses. He is periodically designated as special judge for the Knox County, Tenn., General Sessions Court, Criminal Division. In addition, he has been an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee College of Law since 1996 and has received awards for his faculty contributions. Oberman earned his J.D. in 1980 from the University of Tennessee College of Law and his B.A. in 1977 from Auburn University. He has authored or co-authored many articles related to DUI defense issues, including “Investigating the DUI Case: Things to Do, Places to Go, People to See,” The Champion (March 2009); “Statistical Evaluation of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests,” Journal of Forensic Sciences (May 2005); “Crawford v. Washington, A DUI Defense Practitioner’s Perspective,” The Champion (September/October 2004); and “Cross-Examination of the State's Blood Test Expert,” The Champion (December 2001). He is also co-author of a national treatise entitled Drunk Driving Defense, available on Westlaw® in the DDDEF database.

Oberman has been chair or co-chair of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, DUI Committee since 1995. He has served on the board of regents for the National College for DUI Defense, Inc. (NCDD) since 1999, and serves as dean of the NCDD in 2009–10. He became the first lawyer in Tennessee to become board-certified in DUI defense law. Throughout his career, Oberman has served on the board of directors of many other organizations, including the Knoxville Legal Aid Society, the Federal Defender Services of East Tennessee, and Project First Offender. He is a frequent speaker throughout the United States on various topics relating to DUI defense, having spoken at more than 150 seminars in 19 states, and has appeared on local and national radio and television news shows to discuss DUI-related issues. Oberman is a graduate of the DUI and Traffic Safety Faculty Development Workshop, developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and taught at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nev. He also was the only private practitioner to participate in an NHTSA-sponsored symposium on the Feasibility of Per Se Laws for Drugged Driving in Washington, D.C.

Oberman has been rated AV by Martindale-Hubbell—the highest rating awarded to attorneys and one shared by fewer than 21 percent of all lawyers in the United States. Business Tennessee magazine has named him one of the “101 Best Lawyers” in Tennessee each year since the inception of the list in 2004. Moreover, he has been recognized as one of the “Best Lawyers in America” by a publication of the same name; has been listed as one of the “Top 100 Trial Lawyers” by the American Trial Lawyers Association; and has been named as a “Super Lawyer” by a publication that recognizes the top 5 percent of the lawyers in the United States. Further, he has been listed in Marquis’ Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
