Jonathan P. Friedland
Jonathan Friedland is a partner with Levenfeld Pearlstein LLC, where he leads its Restructuring & Insolvency Service Group. Mr. Friedland has extensive experience in guiding distressed companies and their constituents through a variety of challenging situations. Mr. Friedland also represents a number of private equity funds and other opportunistic purchasers in their distressed M&A transactions, through bankruptcy, assignments for the benefit of creditors, and other means. The issues Mr. Friedland has litigated include: DIP financing, management incentive plans, equitable subordination, substantive consolidation, confirmation issues, automatic stay issues, assumption/rejection and other lessor-lessee disputes, preference claims, and fraudulent conveyance claims. He regularly counsels boards of directors and senior management with respect to fulfilling their fiduciary duties in difficult situations. Mr. Friedland’s chapter 11 debtor representations have included Hydraulic Technologies, Inc., Musicland Corporation, HomeLife Corporation, Polymer Group, Inc., and Globe Holdings, Inc. His chapter 11 committee representations have included InGEAR Corporation, Universal Food & Beverage, Inc, and Capital Engineering & Manufacturing Company. He has also served as counsel to ad hoc groups of creditors, individual creditors, and virtually all other parties interest in bankruptcy cases. A frequent speaker and writer on the areas of law in which he practices, Mr. Friedland also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Strategic Management at the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business. In the past, he has guest lectured at St. John’s Bankruptcy LLM Program and served as a Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Tennessee, College of Law (in the areas of corporate law and bankruptcy). Mr. Friedland is on the Board of Directors of the American Bankruptcy Institute and is also Co-Executive Editor of the American Bankruptcy Institute Journal. He is one of just six principal contributing editors of Norton's Bankruptcy Law and Practice 3d and Bankruptcy Litigation 2d. He is also a contributor to Bankruptcy Litigation (West) and Business Bankruptcy Acquisitions (ABI), and is a member of the advisory boards of the ABI Law Review and of The Corporate Counselor. He has also been profiled, interviewed, and quoted in publications such as Bankruptcy Court Decisions, Daily Bankruptcy Review, The Daily Deal and Dow Jones’ LBO Wire. Mr. Friedland is AV rated by Martindale Hubble, holds a 10/10 rating on the attorney rating website AVVO, has been repeatedly recognized as an Illinois “super lawyer,” and has received several other similar distinctions. Mr. Friedland received his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and is admitted to practice in several jurisdictions. He was previously a partner with Kirkland & Ellis LLP.
