Howard Newman is the president and chief executive officer of Pine Brook Road Partners PLLC. Mr. Newman was with Warburg Pincus from 1984 to 2006, where he was most recently vice chairman and senior adviser and a senior member of Warburgs management and investment operations. Throughout his career, he led or co-led Warburg Pincus energy, financial services, media, real estate, and general investment practices, and served on Warburgs Ventures Operating Committee, Executive Management Group, Investment Policy Committee, and Economic Advisory Council. Mr. Newman invested in forty-seven companies while at Warburg, including Newfield Exploration Company, RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd., and Mellon Bank Corporation.
Mr. Newman has served on the boards of fifteen public companies and as a director or board observer of more than fifteen private companies. He currently serves on the board of directors of Common Resources LLC, Harbor Point Re Ltd., Newfield Exploration Company LP, SLM Corporation, and Stonegate Production Company LLC.
Prior to his time at Warburg, Mr. Newman spent ten years in energy and financial services investment banking at Morgan Stanley. Mr. Newman has served as an adviser to the governor of New York on energy policy, a senior adviser to the Long Island Power Authority and as chairman of the Yale University Councils Committee on the Economic Development of New Haven. He is a trustee of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Mr. Newman holds a B.A. in economics (magna cum laude with distinction) and an M.A. in economics from Yale University. He was a Marshall Scholar at Cambridge University and holds a Ph.D. in business economics from Harvard University.
