Richard Bisio
Of counsel to the firm of Kemp, Klein, Umphrey, Endelman & May, P.C. He concentrates his practice in the area of commercial litigation, particularly involving contract, financing, real estate, partnership, and corporate control disputes.


Mr. Bisio received a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1970 and a law degree from the Wayne State University, magna cum laude, in 1979. After graduation from law school, Mr. Bisio served as law clerk to Judge Robert E. DeMascio in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.


Mr. Bisio has taken an active role in drafting court rules in the Michigan courts through his bar activities. He has been a member of the State Bar Committee on Civil Procedure and Courts since 1986 and currently co-chairs the committee, which comments on and proposes court rules. He has appeared in administrative hearings before the Michigan Supreme Court to advocate rule changes and has drafted a number of proposals that the Court adopted through the years. Since 1994 he has been the permanent reporter for the Local Rules Advisory Committee for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. In that capacity, he oversees the committee’s work in commenting on and proposing rule amendments and was instrumental in an extensive revision of the local rules of that court. Mr. Bisio has also taught courses on civil procedure as an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School and the Institute for Continuing Legal Education.


Mr. Bisio’s other bar activities include membership in the State Bar Committee on the U.S. Courts since 1988 (chair 2001-2002). In that capacity he authored reports on changes in federal court procedure and jurisdiction that the committee distributed to all federal judges in Michigan. He is also a member of the Federal Bar Association, Eastern District of Michigan Chapter, a member of its executive board from 1996 to 1998, and a member of the planning committees for two federal bench-bar conferences.


Mr. Bisio was co-editor of the Michigan Bar Journal’s Federal Opinion Notes Column from 1982 to 1991, digesting important recent decisions of the federal court in Detroit. He has also authored other articles in the Michigan Bar Journal regarding civil procedure.
